How to Use Interior Door Colors to Make a Statement

Interior Door Colors

Design by Pistachio Terrace

Are you looking for a way to add a little personality, color, or interest to the interior of your home? Painting your interior doors is a great option, and there are tons of interior door colors from which to choose! Painted interior doors are an on-trend and easy way to give your home a makeover. It allows you to play with color on a smaller scale–no need to commit to a whole new color scheme–and change the feel of your home in an afternoon. And don’t limit yourself to only painting bedroom doors. You could paint the bathroom, pantry, and closet doors too!

Why Paint Interior Doors?

Think of painted interior doors as the new accent wall: they add a pop of color to a space without overwhelming it. It’s fun and easy to paint your interior doors, and it’s not difficult to change them if you decide to go a different direction. Painting interior doors a color is a way to refresh your space and inject it with sophistication, fun, or a unique look. Painted interior doors add interest to a room or space that lacks architectural features.

If you’re a DIYer on a budget, and looking to add a lot of bang for your buck, painting your bedroom doors is a great move. It changes the whole look and feel of a space, but it takes less paint (and time!) to paint a door than to paint a whole room or even an accent wall. Painting your interior doors can also save money by allowing you to patch, repair, or sand a worn-out door and cover your repairs with paint. This means a door that you may have felt the need to replace can get a new lease on life.

Interior Door Color Ideas

Looking for some bedroom door color ideas? The color you choose really depends on your home’s aesthetics and your personal taste. You want the interior doors to fit in with your color scheme and add to it, not fight against it. If you’re planning to sell your home in the future, it’s probably best to stick to a popular or neutral color. But if this home is your forever home (or you don’t mind repainting later!), choose whatever you love.

Popular Neutral Colors for Interior Doors

Neutral doesn’t mean boring! Painting your interior doors a neutral color gives your home a curated, warm, dramatic, and sophisticated look.

Ideas for Painting Doors

  • A gentle off-white or creamy-white color is perfect for a home with gray or taupe walls. It looks less stark than white doors–warm and inviting.
  • Gray interior doors give you some color while remaining neutral. Gray goes with anything and looks great.
  • Taupe, which is a brown with gray undertones, or a gray with brown undertones, works well as a warmer neutral. If your kitchen cabinets and countertops lean toward the warmer brown side, taupe may make a good interior door color for you.
  • Black is probably the most popular color for interior doors currently. A softer black with some gray, some blue, or some green mixed in is less jarring than a straight black door. Black looks sophisticated and dramatic.

Best Bright Colors for Interior Doors

For a dramatic, bold, fun, or unexpected pop of color, try a bright paint color for your bedroom or other interior doors.

  • Red is a cheerful color that looks great especially if your exterior door is also painted red. You can go with a dark red for an upscale look or a bright red for a bold statement. Red looks good on bedroom doors, playroom doors, and the interior of kitchen doors.
  • A bright canary yellow is hard to beat. It’s cheerful, energized, and fun. Yellow looks great with gray, white, and blue walls and accents as well.
  • How about a dark or pastel pink? Light pink is a great color choice for a nursery or little girl’s bedroom door. A deep pink would be great for an older girl or even a bathroom door. Light pink with an undertone of gray keeps the pink from looking like a nursery color–it’s a soft, subtle color that is warm, gentle, and a little unexpected.
  • Bright or deep greens are great colors for interior doors. Green is calming and can even work as a neutral if it has darker undertones. Brighter green works well with clean white and navy colors, while darker greens look good with grays and taupes.
  • Bright blue, turquoise, and dark teal bedroom or other interior doors are striking. Blue interior doors can be subtle or dramatic, and there’s a blue that complements just about any color scheme you have.

Beautiful Moody Colors for Interior Doors

Dark and dramatic colors are great for interior doors. If you want to add a moody feel to your home but dark walls aren’t for you, consider painting your bedroom doors one of these colors.

  • Dark gray is a perfect choice. If your walls are white or cream-colored, dark gray gives you a refined, clean look.
  • A good smoky or navy blue looks crisp and tailored. Smoky blue allows you to play with color without going too bold, while navy and other dark blues give you the same dramatic look as black or dark gray.
  • Dark greens, especially ones with a lot of gray in them, are moody and yet still calming. They hint at nature and the outdoors while still looking sophisticated.
  • Iron ore is black with dark brown, almost bronze undertones. Iron ore is a perfect color for walking the line between neutral and vivid. It fits most color schemes and is very popular.

Should You Paint the Trim Also?

It’s really up to you whether or not to paint the trim around your interior doors when you paint the doors a color. You can leave the trim white or paint it the same color as the walls. You can paint it to match the door. Or you can even paint it a contrasting color if you’re looking for a bold design. The choice is yours–all of those options are common and can look great.

Painting Your Interior Doors

You’ll want to use a satin or semi-gloss paint for your doors so they will be wipeable. You can paint your bedroom or other interior doors while they are in place on their hinges, or by removing them. There are benefits to both ways. If you leave the doors on the hinges, you can paint both sides without waiting for one to dry and then flipping the door. You won’t have to mess with rehanging the door either, but you will have to tape the hinges and be careful not to shut the door before it dries completely.

If you remove the door, you can paint it flat, which reduces drips, and you can paint the top and bottom edges. You can also remove the hinges and not have to worry about getting paint on them. But you will need to remove and then rehang the door, and you’ll have a longer dry time since one side will need to dry completely before you flip it and paint the other side.

Once you’ve decided which way to paint it, make sure you remove door knobs, strike plates, and anything else. Carefully tape off anything you can’t remove. Paint with a brush first, being careful of drips, and then, while the paint is still wet, go over the door with a small roller to erase brush marks. Give it a second coat with the roller if needed. Let it dry completely before closing it, hanging it if necessary, and reinstalling the doorknob.

When you’re painting your interior door, it’s also a great time to consider upgrading the hardware. A new doorknob or door handle can make the new paint job look even better.
