This Renovated House

Home Renovation

Welcome!

Hello! We are Latham and Jeremy. We are a somewhat insane married couple who decided a few years ago to really test our marriage and start doing live-in renovations.  We decided to do it for a few reasons. Read more about our reasons on our about page!

This Renovated House is intended to help you with your renovations, whether just one room or an entire home. We are sharing how-to’s, some of our renovations, and more. Our goal is to help you envision and create a home you love! We believe that if we can do it, you can too!

If you are anything like me, all of your ideas for your renovation are captured very loosely on Instagram, Pinterest, a spiral notebook, a note on my phone, and a couple of paper towels somewhere in my purse. Although very late to the party, I write before you now as a true believer in mood boards after creating my first bathroom mood board.

In this post, I will show you the bathroom mood board for our DIY bathroom remodel and describe some of the thoughts behind my decisions for the design. Even if my style is not inspiring to you, I hope this blog post will give you an idea of how to create an interior design mood board with your own fantastic bathroom ideas!

Primary Bathroom Backstory

I will quickly give you the backstory on this primary (or second primary) bathroom renovation. The home we are working on now has a primary bedroom and bath on the first floor, two bedrooms and a bathroom in the basement, and two bedrooms on the second floor that shared a Jack and Jill bathroom. The subject bathroom for this post is one of the two bathrooms that were created from that Jack and Jill bathroom.

When renovating, we are always thinking about resale. Having a bathroom attached to a bedroom is always a great selling point if you can make it work. If you are interested in how we did it (which you might also be able to do), make sure to check out my post, Jack and Jill Bathroom Ideas: Create Two Instead!

Not only were we able to squeeze two bathrooms out of one, but we had enough room (barely) to make one of them a primary-style bathroom with a tub, shower, and double vanity. A main bathroom for two, along with a bit of space we were able to add to the bedroom, allowed us to create a second-floor primary bedroom, which is a perfect setup for a family that has parents living with them, for example.

Design

As I said earlier, we are always thinking of resale when renovating. When it comes to quality, we think about what we would want from a home. It is for that reason that we do not cut corners, and it is also for that reason that we are as slow as molasses. We try to take our time to do things the right way rather than the fastest way.

When choosing materials, I think along the same lines. I try to choose timeless over trendy, avoid materials that will date a home too quickly, and use materials that will last and even improve with age. I also tend to gravitate toward natural materials that can stand the test of time, especially when it comes to tile and flooring. There is an inherent beauty that comes with natural stone, and in the character it gains over time, making it even more beautiful!

Look and Feel

I should start with the bathroom floor plan (don’t mind my elementary Bluebeam sketch). This bathroom will include a bathtub area, a 30″ x 60″ shower, a toilet room, and a double vanity. Fortunately, we were able to incorporate the double window into the primary bathroom, which allows a ton of natural light into the space, making the room feel bright and spacious.

Mood Board

After making a mood board, I realized that seeing all the materials together is very helpful!   A real interior designer would probably cringe hearing this, but I normally plan my designs and order materials entirely on the fly. I rarely have a documented plan. I only have incomplete ideas swirling around in my dangerously disorganized mind.

Now, on to the bathroom mood board!

Products

Floor Tile

As you can probably tell from the mood board, I am a big fan of marble. The use of marble can easily help you achieve a stunning, classic look if that is your interior style. The marble floor tile I chose for the floor is a 12″ x 24″ honed Carrara White marble tile. The honed finish keeps the tile from being too slippery when wet. It also gives it a less formal feel. I plan to use Warm Gray grout to help balance out the gray in the marble.

Shower Floor

I really wanted to install checkerboard floors somewhere in our new house, so the shower it is! The tile is a 1″ x 1″ Carrara White Bardiglio Gray marble in checkerboard mosaic. Although cleaning them is not my favorite thing to do due to the number of grout lines, mosaic tile is excellent for shower floors because they help prevent slipping.

Shower Walls

For the wall tile in the shower, I chose to use a 3″ x 6″ Carrara White Honed Marble Tile. I plan to install them with warm gray grout in a running bond pattern. While I am not thrilled about installing 600 individual tiles, I feel confident it will be worth it in the end.

Arch Tile

We installed an arch in the entry to the shower, which I am really excited about (I have a post on installing arches if that piqued your interest). I will install Riad Tile’s 2″ x 6″ Zellige Tile in Snow White inside the arch and along the sides of the shower. The length of the tile is perfect for giving us a small lip inside the shower to end the wall tile.

Double Vanity

I purchased the new vanity from Willow Bath and Vanity. It is a 60″ Sonoma Double Vanity in Dark Forest Green with a Straight Carrara Marble top. I loved the reeded cabinet doors; the deep green color is gorgeous.

Freestanding Tub

For the bathtub, I wanted something simple with clean lines that is not too modern. This 59″ bathtub from the Wyndham Collection seems perfect, and it is not terribly expensive.

Bathroom Faucets

I chose to go with all brass (or brass-ish) fixtures for the plumbing in this bathroom. The sink faucets are a brushed bronze (looks like brushed brass), a widespread two-handle faucet by Symmons. I actually installed three of these in our last house and loved them so much that I ordered them for this house!

Tub Faucet

Plumbing fixtures play a huge role in the overall aesthetic of a bathroom. Not only did I need to install a freestanding tub filler instead of a wall-mount faucet, but I also really wanted to have the look of one next to the bathtub. I love the Delta Trinsic Floor Mounted Tub Filler in Champagne Bronze (it also looks like brushed brass).

Wall Sconces

We installed a few recessed can lights in the bathroom to ensure we had enough light, but I also wanted the type of soft light that a vanity light provides. After searching for more time than I care to admit, I finally landed on the Savoy House Lorraine 17 Inch Wall Sconce. I wanted a mixture of brass and black fixtures throughout the house, so we did the same in the bathroom.

Wall Paint

In the bathroom, I will use Sherwin Williams Alabaster, which is the same wall and trim paint color I am using in the rest of the home. I used Pure White on the last project and decided that I wanted this one to be a bit warmer. I love the way it looks with the marble.
